Rise of the Tomb Raider Xbox exclusivity ‘has a duration’

The Rise of the Tomb Raider could hit the PS4 after all, as Microsoft confirms the game’s Xbox exclusivity deal ‘has a duration’.

With Microsoft having last night announced that the Square Enix game would be exclusively available on Xbox at launch, the console maker has now dropped hints that this deal might not be a black and white as we were led to believe.

“I have Tomb Raider shipping next holiday exclusively on Xbox,” Phil Spencer, head of Xbox said speaking with Eurogamer. Although not detailing the exact timeframes, he added that “the deal has a duration.”

Although the exact ins and outs of this exclusivity deal are unclear, it would appear far more likely that Rise of the Tomb Raider would pop up on PC following a spell of Xbox exclusivity rather than Sony’s PS4.

Despite reiterating that Rise of the Tomb Raider will be an Xbox exclusive when it first lands during the 2015 holiday season, Spencer has failed to quash speculation that the game could move to rival platforms after its initial launch phase.

"It is Xbox 360 and Xbox One,” Spencer said of the game’s launch platforms. “I'm not trying to fake anybody out in terms of where this thing is.”

"When people want me to say, can you tell us when or if it's coming to other platforms, it's not my job."

He added: “What they do with the franchise in the long run is not mine. I don't control it. So all I can talk about is the deal I have. I don't know where else Tomb Raider goes.

“There are certain things I'm just not going to talk about because it's a business deal between us and [Square Enix]. Obviously the deal does have a duration. I didn't buy the IP in perpetuity."
