Apple has revealed 90 per cent of iOS users are running the latest iOS 7 software update.
Craig Federighi, Senior VP of Apple Software Engineering, announced that “almost 9 out of 10 users in our install base are using the latest software” during the Apple WWDC 2014 conference.
Apparently, over “130 million customers last year bought their first iOS device”, although Apple didn’t confirm what percentage of this figure were the latest iPhone 5S or iPhone 5C models.
However, it did say that many of those users were making the switch from Android.
“One of the reasons why customers say they love iOS is that we make available our software updates to as many people as possible”, explained Federighi.
He then went on to compare this to Google’s latest Android KitKat mobile OS, which it claims isn’t doing as well.
“Less than 1 out of 10 of [Google’s] customers are on their latest software” and “over a third of their customers are running a version of Android from four years ago.”
Google’s latest Android 4.4 KitKat was designed to run on low to mid-range devices with as little as 512MB of RAM. Despite this, not a huge amount of devices actually have access to the latest OS due to the difficulties of making it compatible with manufacturers’ own UIs.
Apple announced iOS 8 and OS X 10.10 Yosemite at WWDC, with a strong focus on “continuity” between devices.
