Amazon holding launch event for new phone on June 18?

A video and form have appeared online that asks users to sign up for an Amazon launch event on June the 18th. Could this be Amazon's much-rumoured phone about to launch?

The form asks interested people if they are journalists, developers or just interested members of the public. People who fall into the last category can submit a video explaining why they want to go, or just explain with text.

Questions on the form aimed at developers hint at new types of sensors, and the traditional motion-based stuff we're used to, like gyroscopes and accelerometers. There's also a rather interesting question about machine learning, which could imply the phone is very smart indeed, and capable of being aware and learning from its owner.

Things get more interesting with the video though. The usual cavalcade of pretty people are looking at something which we don't get to see. It appears to be small though, around phone size. They're all amazed by what it does and one asks if "I have to give this back". The movement of their hands does suggest 3D. This is something that has been rumoured for the device before, so it seems sort of consistent.

One of the users also says "that's pretty damn intuitive" which also suggests that the phone - if it is a phone - is much more capable than anything else that guy has seen before. Of course, that guy might live in a cave, so it's hard to really tell how good a judge he is of technological intuition. Still, it's something interesting to think about.

June 18th is just before Google's I/O too. So we might be in for a very interesting end of the month. We'll have news as it develops.
