Gangnam Style video becomes first to hit 2 billion views

Many of you have clearly been working on your dance moves as Gangnam Style becomes the first YouTube video to hit the 2 billion views milestone.

The video, by South Korean K-pop star Psy, was originally released back in July 2012, and has now clocked up more than 2 billion YouTube views in the subsequent 22 months.

This staggering figure equates to more than a quarter of the world’s popular or twice the number of registered Facebook accounts.

Holding the crown as the most watched video in history, Gangnam Style has receided almost twice as many views as the second most popular YouTube video, Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’.

As well as being the most viewed YouTube video of all time, Gangnam Style has birthed thousands of copycat videos, will all manner of viewers and celebrities alike uploading their own rendition of the catchy dance vid.

Despite Gangnam’s Psy being responsible for three of the fifteen most viewed YouTube video’s, his follow-on to the cult classic – Gentleman – has received ‘just’ 700 million views to date.

Last year Psy bemoaned the success of the Gangnam Style, saying it was hard not to be defined by the one song.

"The problem is my music video is more popular than I am," he said. "So I've got to overcome my music video first."

Gangnam might be the most popular overall, but what is your favourite YouTube video? Let us know via the comments box below.
