Look at all those iOS 8 features
Additional iOS 8 features have been teased by one of the closing slides of the WWDC presentation.
Apple announced iOS 8 at WWDC 2014 last night, touting it the “biggest update since the launch of the App Store”.
Things like updates to Messages and Safari were given particular prominence as well as the new HealthKit and HomeKit hubs, but there are some additional features the company has yet to expand upon.
As you can see in the slide above, there are a fair number of iOS 8 features Apple didn’t mention in the WWDC presentation.
These include Wi-Fi Calling, which should let you make standard calls over a Wi-Fi connection, even if you don’t have any cellular signal.
It also looks like iOS 8 will add call waiting support for Apple’s FaceTime service, meaning you could accept or reject incoming calls when you’re engaged in an existing FaceTime call.
Something that Apple has taken straight from Android is upcoming travel time notifications, already found in Google Now. Although we don’t quite know how it will be implemented in iOS 8, but you should be able to travel times to your next appointment or destination. Perhaps this will be done with Siri or just by the Notification Centre.
We’re particularly pleased that iOS 8 will add the ability to view battery usage by app. You can currently see how much storage each app is using, but now you’ll be able to see which apps are sucking your battery more than others.
There are also a few Camera app tweaks inbound, including a camera timer. This will hopefully work with both the rear and front-facing camera when iOS 8 is released and let you set up your shot remotely.
Apple is adding separate focus and exposure controls in the Camera app, which will make it easier for advanced iPhone photographers to create better smartphone pictures.
You’ll also be able to take advantage of panoramic photo tools for iPad, if you’re one of those people who whip out a tablet to take pictures in public places…
iOS 8 will introduce something Apple is calling a Tips App. As there’s no further elaboration yet, we’re guessing this could be an internal tips and tricks guide for iOS 8.
