It looks like Apple OS X 10.10 Yosemite might feature an iOS style Control Panel.
Apple is due to unveil the new OS X operating system tonight, June 2, at its WWDC conference.
So far, we’ve not read many leaks about the actual features Apple’s new desktop operating system will bring, but the banners at the conference suggest it will be called Yosemite after the Californian Yosemite National Park.
However, MacRumours has managed to nab some leaked screenshots purportedly from the new OS X that appeared on a now deleted Reddit account.
The leaker apparently obtained these screenshots directly from Apple’s HQ in Cupertino, but there’s no way to check if they are the real deal.
If we assume these photos are legitimate, they point to a number of changes in the look and functionality of OS X 10.10 Yosemite.
From the looks of one screenshot, Apple will introduce an iOS 7 style Control Centre, down the left hand side of the OS X 10.10 UI, potentially accessible in a similar way to the Mavericks Notifications Centre.
This should give you access to quick toggles for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Do Not Disturb mode, music controls, System Preferences and AirPlay among other features.
The Notifications Centre has also been enhanced a little by the looks of things, with Apple potentially adding a new “Today” view as you get with iOS 7 showing the weather and other details.
It also looks like Apple has added a Quick Look functionality to the Spotlight Search, letting you get a speedy preview of content you’ve searched for.
The app dock has also been given a translucent bar as with iOS 7, rather than the shelf motif currently used for Macs. As for the app icons themselves, it looks like the majority are unchanged, apart from Finder, which has the same double face motif but without the dual-blue background.
Safari has also been given some iOS tweaks, with the blank browser page strongly resembling that featured on the iPad version with its large bookmark buttons and frequently visited sites.
As for the name of OS X 10.10, it looks like Apple is following the tradition started by OS X Mavericks last year, in that Apple has changed from its big cat naming system to Californian locations.
