Motorola corrects its Moto G memory errors
Motorola has admitted that it got the Moto G’s lack of expandable memory wrong, as the company corrects the issue with a revised, 4G handset.
With the original Moto G having landing last year with a lack of microSD expansion, the manufacturer has today updated the affordable smartphone, bringing 4G, LTE connectivity and memory expansion to the device for the first time.
However, Motorola has opened up to TrustedReviews, telling us that the wallet-friendly device should have been bestowed with expandable memory from the start.
“There is always a list of features and functions that you debate at length,” Mark Randall, Motorola’s Senior Vice President of Supply Chain and Operations said discussing the piecing together of the original Moto G.
“The memory slot on Moto G was a feature we debated for a long time, it was like shall we do it, should we not do it?”
Speaking exclusively with TrustedReviews he added: “That, quite frankly, is one that we got wrong.
“We should probably, in hindsight, have put the memory slot in when we first did the Moto G. However, having said that, having gone from zero to six per cent in the market in the UK and 17 per cent of the prepaid, it has been a hugely successful device.”
Detailing the company’s reasoning for omitting microSD expansion from the original Moto G, the Senior VP suggested that aesthetics was one of the main points against its inclusion.
“Some of the things to think about when you have a memory slot is that sometimes a memory slot can impact on the industrial design,” Randall said.
Quality control was another key factor, with Randall stating: “When foreign objects get put into a phone, you’re adding a risk of quality defects so then you have to add software safety testing functionality. They are all the internal debates we had.”
