The LG G3 is official and the countless rumours and leaks were true, the company’s Samsung Galaxy S5 rival has been unveiled with a 5.5-inch QHD display.
Having been the subject of much speculation in recent weeks, Korean manufacturer LG has formally showcased its latest flagship smartphone offering, with the LG G3 lining up as a metal-effect bodied powerhouse which will go head-to-head with the HTC One M8 and iPhone 5S.
“When we introduced the G2 last year, we talked about learning from you,” Dr Ramchan Woo, LG’s Head of Smartphone Planning said in unveiling the phone. “We have continued to listen and found that what you wanted was not complexity, but more simplicity.”
He added: “Your life will be simpler with G3 and your life will be smarter with G3. Simple is the new smart.”
LG G3 Features
The LG G3 sees the manufacturer step up its smartphone effects once again. Taking a number of pointers from last year’s LG G2, the new G3 sees rear-mounted volume and power buttons make another appearance alongside an edge-to-edge display and a near bezel-free design.
Taking the smartphone game to the next level, the LG G3 is the first phone from a major manufacturer to run a QHD display, with the 5.5-inch panel boasting a stunning 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution.
Pairing this screen with an array of powerful innards, the LG G3 specs sheet is further enhanced by a 2.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, expandable via microSD up to 128GB.
A 13-megapixel rear-mounted camera is enhanced by a dual LED flash, 4K video recording and a new Laser Auto Focus, while a secondary, 2.1-megapixel snapper sits up front. Both benefit from a touchscreen shutter.
Showing improvements across the board, the LG G3 design features a new, brushed metal finish, a notable step up on last year’s plastic G2. The phone will be available in five colours at launch, including black, white and gold.
One of the main concerns about adding a QHD display to a smartphone has been the negative effects on battery consumption. LG has looked to address this with a removable 3000mAh Lithium-Polymer battery under the hood.
This hefty array of premium components means the G3 is marginally thicker than its predecessor. The new offering measures in a 146.3 x 74.6 x 9.1mm in size.
As well as tackling the hardware race, LG has also given the G3 a major software boost. Featuring a refreshed UI, the handset benefits from a a range of health and communication boosts, with a 'concierge' service offering Google Now style suggestions based on your phone's usage and location.
Running Android 4.4 KitKat, the G3 also runs LG's recent Knock On and Knock Lock features.
