The LG G Watch features could include 3G connectivity when it launches later this year.
Although LG has kept specific details about the Android Wear-powered G Watch under wraps so far, a new report suggests the wrist-worn device will offer cellular capabilities.
According to Korean media “industry sources”, the G Watch will pack 3G connectivity using a Universal Subscriber Identity Module (USIM).
This functionality would allow you to make or receive calls with the LG G Watch without a smartphone, potentially among other 3G based activities.
Samsung is also apparently working on a SIM-based spin off for its Samsung Gear 2 smartwatch, allegedly known as the Samsung Gear Solo.
The LG G Watch release date isn’t confirmed yet, but LG has said its smartwatch will arrive sometime in W2 2014.
“You can expect it in quarter two of this year, so very, very quickly,” said James Marshall, Director of Mobile Communications at LG Europe to TrustedReviews.
The LG G Watch will come with a 1.65-inch square screen, setting it apart from its round-faced Android Wear rival the Motorola Moto 360.
All we know about the smartwatch so far is that it features a metal body that is “sleek and lightweight” as well as being IP67 water and dust resistant.
It will comes in two colours, white and black with the former featuring a gold face trim, potentially making it appeal more to women.
The G Watch runs Android Wear, Google’s special operating system designed for wearable gadgets, starting with smartwatches.
You might hear more about the LG G Watch at the LG G3 launch later today, but we expect LG will wait to dedicate a separate event to its Android Wear smartwatch.
