Windows Phone 8.1 Action Center
The first solid evidence of a full notification system in Windows Phone 8.1 has leaked in the form of some authentic screenshots.
Confidential screenshots of Windows Phone 8.1, apparently destined for a Powerpoint presentation of some kind, have appeared on the Winphollowers website.
They reveal what Microsoft is calling "Action Center" - initially a quick and customisable display of four control shortcuts for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, system settings and the like. This can apparently be accessed through a short downwards drag from the top of the screen.
It’s a familiar feature for Android and iOS users, and one that Windows Phone fans have been crying out for ever since the launch of Windows Phone 7.
Drag down further from the top of the screen on Windows Phone 8.1 and you’ll access a full notification centre, which includes all of the usual mails, messages, and notifications from a variety of apps. It appears as if these notifications are separated by app rather than timing.
There’s also a Clear All option here, as well as an All Settings option for customising your notifications. Here it’s possible to set up "ghost notifications," so you aren’t alerted by certain applications. Again, this will feel very familiar to Android and iOS users.
We’re expecting to see Windows Phone 8.1 officially unveiled at Microsoft’s Build Conference in April. Aside from a new notification centre, the biggest addition will be a Siri-like voice-recognising personal assistant called Cortana.
Separate media playback and ringtone controls, VPN support and Windows 8.1 style Bing Smart Searches are also expected.
