Call of Duty 2014 is built for Xbox One and PS4 first

Activision has confirmed that the Call of Duty 2014 game will be developed for Xbox One and PS4 ahead of current gen alternatives.

Eirc Hirshberg, CEO at Activision Publishing, confirmed the Call of Duty game being developed by Sledgehammer is primarily for next-gen consoles.

“Sledgehammer is approaching this as a next-gen first development,” said Hirshberg in an interview with IGN. “Obviously in the console-transition year, anyone who developed a cross-generational game last year had to deal with the fact that the technology of the enxt-gen platforms was still coming into focus and changing quite a bit during the development process.”

“Now that we have the next-gen hardware out in the marketplace and solid, that is our primary development.”

Activision is remaining silent on any details as to how the game will be developed next-gen platform first, and how the unique Xbox One and PS4 features will be utilised in the next COD title.

However, Activision has brought in Sledgehammer to the COD launch cycle to help solve next-gen development issues quickly.

“On the two-year cycle, with the level of content we were putting in the games, it became a real horse race each and every time to get everything done that we wanted to get done.”

“We’ve got more capabilities than ever before to play with and we want to make sure our developers have the time to innovate, iterate, to bring the best creative vision and the most possible polish to each and every game.”

Both Sledgehammer and Activision have suggested that the 2014 Call of Duty title will be very different from those released by Treyarch Studios and Infinity Ward.

“We give each of our studios a lot of independence,” said Hirshberg, without giving any details away. He did say that “the proof will be in the pudding. When you see it, hopefully, you’ll see what I’m talking about.”

When announcing that it would be responsible for the 2014 COD game, Sledgehammer also teased that the next game will be a little different from what has come before.

“The next Call of Duty represents a new era for this amazing franchise, and we look forward to sharing what we’ve been working on,” said Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey, Sledgehammer co-founders.

“Having the honor of developing the new, next generation of Call of Duty is a developer’s dream come true. All of us here at Sledgehammer Games have a shared vision to create the best work of our lives.”
