Samsung is reportedly working on a range of new smartphone form factors, with a new Galaxy handset tipped to launch later this year with a three-sided bent display.
With the Korean manufacturer having shown off a range of concept smartphone designs in recent years, industry analysts have now claimed that a bent display hosting device is heading to the realms of consumer-available reality.
“The bent smartphones will be rolled out as a Galaxy variant with a few million units at the end of this year, initially taking aim at the niche market,” Song Jong-ho, an analyst at Seoul-based KDB Daewoo Securities said.
It is believed that these ‘bent’ handsets will not be flexible panels such as that on the LG G Flex, but a pre-curved display that wraps around the narrow edges of the handset’s body.
Although Samsung has already launched the Samsung Galaxy Round, a curved screen smartphone, analyst Song has claimed that the upcoming three-sided display handset will further test the waters before the company launches its own fully flexible device.
“The bent device is the first step toward testing the market and gauging how it would react to its foldable smartphones that are to be unveiled in the second half of next year,” Song stated.
Offering insight into why Samsung isn’t jumping straight in with its own LG G Flex rival, the analyst has suggested that the Korea giant has, unlike its rival and compatriot, as yet failed to produce a curved and flexible battery.
“Samsung’s battery segment is still way behind compared to its progress in display technology.”
While a bent screen Samsung handset is not likely to be unveiled for some time yet, it is believed that the eagerly awaited Samsung Galaxy S5 will be formally announced later this month as part of the company’s MWC 2014 plans.
It is expected that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be showcased during the company’s press conference on February 24 alongside a second-generation Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
