Nokia Lumia 1520 and 1020 add RAW photo capabilities

Nokia has set an industry first, with the Nokia Lumia 1520 and Nokia Lumia 1020 cameras updated to shoot and support RAW file modes.

The first smartphones to offer the high capacity file type, Nokia has revealed that both the 41-megapixel camera hosting 1020 and newly confirmed 1520 will benefit from the RAW file support as a result of repeated consumer requests.

“There have been requests for a long time from professionals and amateurs asking for RAW file support. This is something that has not been available in any smartphone before,” Samuli Hänninen, Vice President of Software Program Management for Nokia’s Smart Devices business stated.

He added: “Today I am extremely happy to announce RAW file support for the Nokia Lumia 1520 and Nokia Lumia 1020.”

Explaining what this move means to end users, Hänninen, speaking at today’s Nokia World conference in Abu Dhabi stated: “RAW means that you can capture the pure sensor data and process it the way you would like it to be processed.

“This is the standard in many professional DSLRs and now we are bringing it to smartphone.”

He went on to add: “We are really proud of our cameras and RAW will make them even better. It will hugely improve the flexibility and the creative potential of users.”

Building on the new Nokia Camera app announced earlier today, introduction of RAW photo capabilities will further enhance the already impressive photographic options provided by Nokia’s latest flagship phones.

The new Nokia Lumia 1520, one of the two devices to offer the RAW file support, was officially unveiled today, with a 6-inch 1080p Full HD display lining up alongside a 2.2GHz quad-core processor and Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system.

With a 20-megapixel PureView sensor on the rear, the Nokia Lumia 1520 camera is further enhanced by a Carl Zeiss lens, auto focus and a dual LED flash.
