EA has confirmed that it is working on a “high-end” mobile game version of the Battlefield series, although it’s not clear if and when it will be released.
The Battlefield series could be getting its own high-end mobile gaming app in the near future, as the game developer has confirmed it is already in production.
Speaking to the New York Times, Electronic Arts president Frank Gibeau said the company is working on a dedicated Battlefield mobile game, separate from the Commander Mode app for Battlefield 4.
“You can play Battlefield [4] on a tablet in commander mode. We are working on a mobile game of Battlefield that will be high-end and high-performance”, said Gibeau. “It’s our bet that we can successfully pull that off.”
EA Games is hoping to make Battlefield, and potentially other franchises, a multi-platform experience beyond that offered with BF4 Command Mode.
“We’re embarking on something no one has ever done before – to get these games to inter-operate between platforms. Will it work? It already has in some cases. Will it work for all franchises? Not all franchises will make the transition. Battlefield might be a little harder.”
There is already an iOS and Amazon Kindle Fire Battlefield: Bad Company 2 app, but it was flawed and couldn’t interact with the game.
If EA Games and its mobile app arm, EA Mobile, can make a multiplayer experience for Battlefield that spans Android and iOS devices as well as consoles and PCs, it could be very tempting for consumers who want to take their console experience on the go.
Speaking more generally about gaming as an industry, Gibeau compares the success of Battlefield 3 with the huge disappointment of Medal of Honor: Warfighter.
“You can’t take shortcuts with games like you used to. You can’t put out a console game without a lot of thought. It’s very much a higher risk market. But if you get it right, you have a billion-dollar franchise.”
