Nokia: Why launch a tablet now, why not?

Despite having missed the birth of the tablet market by more than three years, Nokia has defended its decision to join the tablet scene at such a late date stating simply: “Why not.”

Having officially unveiled the Nokia Lumia 2520 during its Nokia World Conference yesterday, the Finnish phone manufacturer has claimed that it didn’t see the lost time in the tablet game as a missed opportunity, with the focus now on completing a product portfolio.

“Why launch a tablet now, why not?” Michael Halbherr, an Executive Vice President with Nokia said when question by TrustedReviews on the company’s tablet timings.

“Why not,” he reiterated. “There was no particular reasoning for the timing of the Lumia 2520 launch. When you look at what Stephen [Elop, Nokia CEO] unveiled, he completed the portfolio.”

He added: “When you look at the Lumia 5-series, the 6,7,8,9 and now at the tablet and the large screen Lumia 1520, now people have choice. Nokia was always been a company that brought choice in a consistent manner.”

Claiming that the Nokia Lumia 2520 has an edge over its competitors despite the manufacturer’s lack of tablet experience, Halbherr stated: “When you look at the tablet, what characterises our tablet is that it can completely replace a PC and not many tablets can do that.

He added: “When you add on the keyboard, this is a tablet that you might actually take with you instead of your PC. People have different styles and that’s why we have different products. The tablet helps make the Lumia range a very nice product family.”

Although Nokia has defended its decision to launch its first tablet more than three years after some of its competitors, the manufacturer has bemoaned its unfortunate timing, with the Nokia Lumia 2520 being announced the same day as the iPad Air and iPad mini 2 with Retina display. What’s more, the Nokia tablet entered the realms of reality on the same day that the rival Microsoft Surface Pro 2 hit retailers.

Nokia spokespeople have told TrustedReviews they felt “disappointed” that Apple had not liaised with it regarding its event plans in order to avoid stepping on each other’s toes.
