Google has updated the Gmail app for iPhone and iPad with a host of iOS 8 features.

The iOS version of Gmail hasn't always received the warmest reception, particularly from power users. However, a new update to Google's email app has given it some much needed iOS 8 functionality.

The biggest addition to Gmail for iOS is the ability to reply to or archive emails from within the notification menu. It's something you've been able to do for ages in the Android Gmail app, but has been missing here ever since Apple made such a feature possible with the release of iOS 8 back in September.

Another major addition here is Gmail's appearance in the iOS 8 share menu. It means that when you bring it up in other apps, Gmail will feature as an option for sharing pictures, documents, and other files.

Finally, Google has added an attachment viewer, which lets you open attachments from Gmail in any app.

With increased competition from Microsoft's revised Outlook app (which benefits hugely from the company's acquisition of Acompli) as well as Mailbox and Google's own Inbox app, it's good that Google has finally raised its iOS Gmail game.

Version 4.0 of the Gmail app is available to download now from the App Store.
