Samsung's new Galaxy Tab 3 10.1
Intel has scored a major win in its attempts to establish itself in the mobile processing market, by forging its way inside Samsung's new Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 tablet.
The company issued a press release on Monday to tout the news, following reports from Reuters late last week that prematurely lifted the lid on the somewhat surprising announcement.
Samsung's officially unveiled the new flagship tablet on Monday unveiling on Monday, but didn't specify which manufacturer would be providing the power for the device. Now that can officially be put to bed.
As the pre-emptive reports claimed, the new Galaxy Tab 10.1 will use the new Intel Atom "Clover Trail " chips, which were announced at MWC in February and have been designed specifically for mobile devices.
The system on a chip (SoC) will feature a 1.6GHz, dual core Intel Atom Z2560, alongside two PowerVR SGX 544 GPU cores.
Intel says the processing units will come in two different iterations for the 3G and 4G versions of the Android Jelly Bean 4.2 tablets.
Intel's victory is definitely ARM's loss. The British processing giant's chip designs had previously powered the entire Galaxy Tab range as well as the vast majority of smartphones on the planet.
Alongside the Intel-based engine, the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, which was officially confirmed yesterday following a host of online rumours, brings 1GB of RAM, a 3-megapixel camera and unto 32GB of storage MicroSD.
