Square-edged application icons have replaced the traditional rounded corners on the Apple developers’ site ahead of an iOS 7 reveal at WWDC.
Applications on the official Apple developers’ site are now being displayed with square edges rather than the traditional rounded corners (see below), prompting further speculation on the new iOS 7 redesign.
The sudden change could be an indication of the iOS 7 redesign due to be showcased at Apple’s annual WWDC Keynote next week on June 10.
Developers have always been asked to upload their app logos as a square icon, with Apple adding the rounded corners using their own system. However, the fact that they are no longer being changed could be the new format Apple has adopted as part of the complete design overhaul tipped for iOS 7.
Supposedly the first iOS 7 image leaked online yesterday, and despite its blurry and low resolution quality, has the potential to offer a glimpse at what’s to come with Apple’s new mobile OS.
Tim Cook has confirmed that Jony Ive is working on an iOS 7 redesign to be revealed at this year’s WWDC. He wouldn’t release any details about the new look of the mobile OS though, which is tipped to be much flatter and strip back the majority of the skueomorphic textures found on apps like Notes, Newsstand and the Calendar.
The Apple Developers’ site changes come just days after Apple launched the official WWDC 2013 app for iPhone and iPad devices.
In contrast to the official WWDC apps from previous years, the WWDC 2013 app is much flatter and more subdued, removing the more aesthetic flourishes. This could also be a signal for what’s to come in iOS 7, especially as this is the app the majority of developers attending Apple’s WWDC will use next week.
Apple’s Senior Vice Presiendet of Worldwide Marketing, Phillip Schiller, already teased a new iOS and OS X for WWDC, saying:
“We can’t wait to get new version of iOS and OS X into [developers’] hands at WWDC.”
