The Nexus 6 started landing in public hands just last month…or did it?
The latest chatter on the web is that the Nexus 6 we’ve all had pushed upon us isn’t the original handset Google had hoped for.
According to prolific tech leaker Evan Blass, the Nexus 6 ‘is still dead’, revealing: “The original handset to have carried the 6 moniker was in fact killed off earlier this year.”
According to Blass, a.k.a. Evleaks, the Nexus 6 was actually an LG device – not Motorola – that has since been repurposed.
Here’s how the story goes (apparently, anyway) – Google gets LG on board to build the Nexus 6, but then gets cold feet about its Nexus range.
Rumours then hit the web that Google might be scrapping Nexus altogether, instead opting for the mysterious ‘Android Silver’ range - which remains elusive to this day.
Thus began public outcry over the alleged binning of Nexus, a line much beloved amongst Android loyalists.
By this point, LG’s fare has already been repurposed for the Silver range, leaving a handset-shaped gap in the Nexus line – a thought none too pleasing for its legions of fans.
Enter the Moto S, a device whispered to be a fresh Motorola offering to the Android fold, and a perfect fit for the aforementioned Nexus gap.
Evleaks reckons that Nexus rage led to the Moto S being repurposed as the Nexus 6, meaning there’s still an LG handset floating about in the tech ether somewhere.
Unfortunately it’s also rumoured that the Android Silver program may have been scrapped altogether, meaning we might never see the true LG-stamped Nexus 6.
