Mozilla has finally relented and is bringing its Firefox web browser to iOS.
Firefox release manager Lukas Blakk recently took to Twitter and wrote "We need to be where our users are so we're going to get Firefox on iOS."
It's thought that this is a quote from Mozilla's VP for Firefox Jonathan Nightingale, with the company holding an internal event in Portland recently.
You might think that it's a little weird that such a major web browser could take this long to decide that iOS is a platform it wants to be on. Mozilla's problem with Apple and iOS is the same one Google faced with Chrome - they're not allowed to use their own web engine on the platform.
Rather, they have to use Apple's own web engine and create a custom UI to layer on top. Alternatively, there's the Opera iOS method of rendering websites on their servers before pushing them to the device.
Google long ago made the former compromise with its Chrome app, but Mozilla has thus far held firm. That resolve seems to have crumbled, probably thanks to the introduction of new CEO Chris Beard back in July. It's amazing what a shift in personnel can do for a company's perspective and priorities.
With most modern users wanting to use the same web browser across all of their devices, this is probably a good move on Mozilla's part.
