Microsoft has officially confirmed its acquisition of the Acompli email app following last week's leak.

The software giant had let slip the surprise a few days ago when it posted a blank blog entry from corporate vice president Rajesh Jha. In the URL were the words "microsoft-acquires-acompli."

Now that premature blog post has arrived properly to announce the acquisition.

"This acquisition is part of our company-wide effort to help people accomplish more with their mobile devices," it reads. Jha also acknowledges that "In a world where more than half of email messages are first read on a mobile device, it’s essential to give people fantastic email experiences wherever they go."

Acompli certainly achieves that goal. It's an email app aimed at business and power users, with strong Outlook support, an integrated calendar, and advanced ways to arrange and deal with recent and important emails.

We suspect that Acompli's Outlook support in particular was what swung it with Microsoft, as most third party email apps tend to ignore Microsoft's email standard altogether. This is despite Outlook being the most popular business email system around.

Accompli will now be integrated with the work currently underway within the Outlook team.

If any Android or iOS user is worried about what this might mean for their continued use of Acompli, don't be. "Our goal is to deliver fantastic cross-platform apps that support the variety of email services people use today and help them accomplish more," says Jha.
