Without so much as a ‘thanks for your noble service’ Apple has seemingly culled the iPod classic music player from its product line up.
As is customary prior to Apple launch events, the company’s website was taken down on Tuesday in order add the new tech. Now it has reappeared, the iPod classic and its iconic click wheel, is nowhere to be seen.
Most Apple observers had expected this day to come at some point, given the device has received hardly any promotion nor upgrades in a number of years, but it is with a little tinge of sadness it has been consigned to gadget history.
Ironically, Apple CEO Tim Cook paid tribute to the click-wheel interface during the unveiling of the Apple Watch at the launch event on Tuesday.
Cook compared the innovative Digital Crown control mechanism on the Watch to other game-changing Apple innovations like the Macintosh’s mouse, the iPhone’s multi-touch tech and, of course, the iPods click wheel.
On the day the Watch arrived, the iPod classic was the product to make way.
Apple has yet to officially acknowledge the iPod classic’s retirement, so it’ll be interesting to see what will happen to the remaining stock.
As a standalone music player, away from the distractions of apps, games, emails and Facebook updates the device remained unparalleled.
