Destiny makes more than $500 million on launch day

Activision has announced it has sold over $500 million worth of Destiny copies to retailers.

According to the publisher, retail orders for Bungie’s new IP helped boost the money made by the game at launch.

That $500 million figure means that Activision has managed to recoup the budget allocated to develop and market Destiny on its first day of release.

“Based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million for Destiny,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “This industry milestone marks another blockbuster success for our company and demonstrates our unique ability to create some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world.“

Destiny launched on September 9 at midnight, with the special Glacier White PS4 Destiny bundle selling out ahead of launch. That no doubt in part thanks to the PlayStation exclusive content that Sony has managed to secure for Destiny.

“Since the beginning, we’ve been confident that our investment and belief in Destiny would pay off. But not many people believed we’d be able to say it did so on day one,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing.

“Destiny is officially the biggest new franchise launch in our industry’s history. It’s also the highest-selling day one digital console release in history. We have more confidence than ever that Destiny will become one of the iconic franchises of this generation and Activision’s next billion dollar brand.”

Two Destiny DLC packs are already in the works. The first of which is called The Dark Below and will launch in December. It will introduce its own story and has one of all the activity types from Destiny.
