It was announced at IDF14 that Intel’s tiny development platform, Edison, goes on sale today.
Shown for the first time at CES 2014 Edison is an entire computer in a form factor the size of a postage stamp or SD card – that’s much smaller than the similar in concept Raspberry Pi.
The Intel Edison module uses a dual core Atom SoC at 500MHz and a Quark processor at 10MHz as well as 1 GB LPDDR3 RAM, 4GB of EMMC, WiFi and low energy Bluetooth.
The idea is that this tiny computer can be used for applications and products that wouldn’t normally be connected to the internet, leading to a whole host of new products. Aimed in particularly at the wearable market and products that will become part of the buzz term of the moment, the Internet of Things (IoT), Edison is designed to be embedded into products and make them ‘smart’.
One of the first products to be shown packing Edison is the Mimo – a baby monitor embedded in a baby grow that provides health measurements back to the parent.
