Apple is aiming to sell a colossal 80 million units of its new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets. Supply chain sources claim the Cupertino company has asked its suppliers to ramp up production as it targets record sales.
Last year Apple sold 60 million iPhones between the launch weekend of the 5s and 5c models until the end of December.
The same insiders reckon Apple will look to sell 10 million new iPhones by the end of September, before averaging around 23 million devices per month before the end of 2014. The former figure is not beyond the realms of possibility: Apple sold nine million iPhone 5s and 5c models over their opening weekend in 2013.
Tim Cook has already predicted the ‘mother of all upgrades’ as users switch back to Apple thanks to the devices’ larger displays. Until now, only Android and Windows Phone handsets have been able to offer users more capacious screens. Apple is hoping its beefed up screens, coupled with iOS, will tip the balance in its favour in the coming months.
The iPhone 6 goes on pre–order tomorrow, 12 September, before hitting shelves on 19 September. SIM–free prices start at £539 for the iPhone 6 and £619 for the iPhone 6 Plus.
