Samsung has just established a research and development team set to work on innovative new projects.
The division will work on various future technologies, not least virtual reality, drones, robots, 3D printing, telepresence robots, and unmanned vehicles, as reported by KoreaTimes.
The team will be led by Samsung’s mobile chief Shin Jong-kyun, and is made up of technicians, strategists, and product managers.
“The team will explore how technologies could help people’s daily life for a better future,” a Samsung official revealed.
“Given the significance of the team, members will have more authority and independence because the main purpose of the team isn’t to develop single devices for any imminent results, but to develop solutions to go with Samsung’s manufacturing capabilities.”
It’s not yet clear how much of Samsung’s new R&D fare will make it to consumers in the near future, but we’ve already seen a VR offering from the South Korean firm in the form of Gear VR.

Samsung’s mobile business has struggled in recent times, facing stiff competition from Apple in the wast and Xiaomi in the east.
The fact that the new team is working under the umbrella of Samsung’s mobile division could be a welcome boon to the otherwise ailing department.
Google has a similarly future-focused division called Google X, which produced some of the firm’s more oddball creations, namely Google Glass, driverless cars, and Project Loon.
