The Nexus Player has been announced as the first device to run Google TV, thanks to a partnership with Asus.
Launched as a collaboration with Asus, the Nexus Player is a little standalone set top box to take on devices like the Amazon Fire TV and Apple TV.
It comes in the form of a small circular box, which comes complete with a voice-activated remote - just like the Amazon Fire TV.
There's also a separately sold Gamepad for Nexus Player that will aid your gaming experience with the Nexus Player.
Nexus Player Features
The Nexus Player is a streaming media player for movies, music and video content. Plus you can also play Android games on it, making your HDTV into a huge gaming screen for Android apps.
Google also confirmed that the Nexus Player is Google Cast Ready, meaning you can cast your content from Chromebooks, Android and iOS devices.
The Nexus Player can also sync your content across devices, meaning you can start watching something on the sofa and finish it off when you've gotten into bed for example.
Google revealed that there are already several apps compatible with the Nexus Player, including Netflix, YouTube, Hulu Plus, TED and Games at Google Play.
Nexus Player Specs
The Nexus Player runs on a 1.8GHz quad-core Intel Atom Imagination PowerVR Series 6 processor with 1GB or RAM and 8GB of internal storage. It can output 1080p full HD at 60Hz and there's also a micro USB 2.0 port.
It is kitted out with Wi-Fi 802.11ac 2x2 (MIMO) and Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity.
The little Nexus Player measures up at 120 x 120 x 20mm, making it only a tad larger than the 115 x 115 x 17.5mm Amazon Fire TV.
Nexus Player Release Date and Price
The Nexus Player will be available to pre-order from October 17 and will hit stores on November 3. There's no word on pricing and availability as yet.
