LG to debut ‘Odin’ chip on mystery G3 spin-off

LG is going to launch a new phone this month to debut its in-house built chip.

This will be the first time the system-on-a-chip processor – named Odin – will be appearing on a consumer device.

The report comes courtesy of ZDNet Korea, stating: “The launch of the new model that is powered by LG’s self-developed AP is imminent.

The chip is LG’s equivalent of Samsung’s Exynos chipset or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon. The latter SoC features prominently across huge swathes of Android-powered devices.

The ‘sources familiar with the matter’ reckon the phone will be a spin-off of the LG G3. ZDNet’s use of the word ‘model’ would also indicate that this isn’t an entirely new device.

According to the report, LG has been working on Odin for the past two years.

The launch was delayed however, thanks to unforeseen issues with overheating and inefficient energy usage.

It’s unlikely the Odin will appear on non-LG devices any time soon, with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon taking up most of the Android chipset market share.

Instead its fate is likely to be similar to Samsung’s Exynos, which only appears on a select few handsets.

Apple also makes its own chips for its devices, with the A8 appearing on the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, and a boosted A8X that debuted on the brand new iPad Air 2.
