Apple will have 40 stores in China by 2016

Apple plans to open 25 more retail stores in China over the next two years, according to CEO Tim Cook.

The fruity firm has a meager 15 retail locations across the eastern nation currently. The UK, by comparison, has 38 Apple stores nationwide.

Cook revealed plans for Chinese domination earlier this year, declaring plans ‘to triple the number of Apple Retail Stores’ in China over the next two years. Now we have a definitive figure.

Apple is yet to reveal which Chinese locations will actually be hosting the new retail spots.

The Apple CEO unveiled its latest plans while speaking to Chinese media today. Cook is currently in the country on what he calls a ‘road trip.’

The chief exec made a point of visiting the Foxconn factory in Zhengzhou, meeting some of the workers toiling away on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus assembly line.

He’s also expected to meet with China’s Vice Premier, Ma Kai, in Beijing, reportedly to discuss privacy concerns and data security.

Apple’s been making a big push in China recently, with the iPhone 6 marked as the first Apple handset to officially land in the country.

Pre-orders went live in China earlier this month, with 1 million customers throwing down cash within the first six hours.

Cook talked about the possibility of profit in China back in Apple’s May earnings call, saying: “I feel like there’s still loads of opportunity there, and feel really, really good about how we’re doing.

“We’re up to 40,000 points of sales now in iPhone, but we’re not nearly where we need to be on the rest of our product line and even the 40,000 is a low number in considering the broad landmass and the number of folks in China.”
