Flappy Bird follow-up Swing Copters revealed

Dong Nguyen, the creator of the infamous smartphone game Flappy Bird, is to release a new game entitled Swing Copters later this week.

Swing Copters can best be described as a vertical version of Flappy Bird. In it you appear to control a small creature wearing a propeller hat.

When you first tap the screen, your character launches into the air at an angle. Tap the screen and he'll change direction, flying off at a different angle.

Like Flappy Bird, progress through Swing Copter's narrow gaps and past its swinging hammers appears to require rapid flurries of tapping. According to the hands-on impressions posted by Touch Arcade, it's every bit as hard as Nguyen's first creation.

Swing Copters will apparently launch on August 21 as a free download. You'll be able to pay a dollar (69p) to remove the ads.

Nguyen hasn't launched a smartphone game since he infamously pulled Flappy Bird from sale back in February. At the time, he lamented the high levels of attention the game was getting in the press (including accusations of plagiarism), as well as its reported addictiveness.

That hasn't stopped Nguyen returning with a revised version of the game in recent weeks. Angry Birds Family is an Amazon Fire TV exclusive, and has as its main new feature a local multiplayer mode.

Whether Swing Copters can match the unexpected word-of-mouth success of Flappy Bird is unclear. We should have a better idea in just a few days time.
