Samsung Galaxy Note 4 to feature ultrasonic cover?

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 could come with a special ultrasonic cover, targeted towards those with visual impairments.

Samsung has a habit of announcing a plethora of accessories with any major smartphone release, but it looks like it has something a bit different in store with the Note 4.

According to Sammobile, Samsung will introduce a special Ultrasonic Cover for the Galaxy Note 4 that could help those with vision-related disabilities.

The sources suggest the Note 4 Ultrasonic Cover will have an inbuilt ultrasonic sensor that is capable of detecting objects located near to the user and relaying feedback to the phone.

The range of the ultrasonic waves can be changed and you can choose between short, middle and long range levels for objects located at various distances. The higher the ultrasonic range, the narrower the circle of detection.

However, thanks to a description of the Ultrasonic Cover obtained by the sources, it looks like Samsung isn’t making any great claims that this would replace a blind person’s cane or guide dog in any manner.

“The product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. This product is a non-medical device. It cannot replace a cane and should never be used as a mobility aid or substitute for any mobility aid tool. It must always be used in combination with a cane, a dog guide or human guide because, by itself, it does not provide information necessary for safe travel.”

Despite the obvious limitations, such as the Ultrasonic Cover not being able to detect drop-offs, this could be a potentially very helpful product for those with visual impairments.

The Galaxy Note 4 is expected to be officially unveiled at the Samsung Unpacked 2014 Episode 2 event on September 3.
