Where we're going, we don't need roads
The Hendo hoverboard is a genuine working hoverboard. It's just hit Kickstarter, and if it raises the necessary funds, can be yours for $10,000 (£6,186).
Not cheap, certainly. But what price can you put on a childhood dream?
It uses the same electromagnetic tech that buildings use to separate from the ground to withstand earthquakes. While it levitates about an inch off the ground, it's far from perfect. It's loud, can't carry a huge load, and only runs for about seven minutes. But this is just a prototype. The company behind it hopes to make a whisper-quiet solid state version.
It also can't hover over any surface – you'll need to ride over conductive materials that serve as a secondary magnetic field. As a testing ground, the start-up made a copper skatepark in the back of its office in Los Gatos, California.
The company is seeking $250,000 to make the hoverboard a reality. It's also offering its Whitebox developer kit, so you can use the hovering tech in any application you like.
Meanwhile, ZBoard has put its bright pink electric skateboard on general sale. The device was originally produced in a limited run for the Michael J. Fox foundation last year, and looks just like the hoverboard from Back to the Future II.
The company even sells officially licensed light-up high tops from the same film. The bundle of high tops and skateboard will set you back $700 (£433), or $600 (£371) for the board alone. So what are you waiting for? Leave your flaming tyre tracks in the direction of the website now.
