OnePlus 2 officially confirmed

OnePlus has confirmed that it will launch a OnePlus 2 early next year.

Carl and David from OnePlus recently took to Reddit for an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session to mark the pre-order availability of the company's excellent (but tough to acquire) first smartphone, the OnePlus One.

Quite a brave move, really, given the flak OnePlus has received for its frustrating invite system.

We're glad they did, though. One of the tastiest questions asked concerned when the OnePlus 2 would be out, and it received an admirably direct answer: "OnePlus 2 should be out in Q2 or Q3 of 2015."

As one cheeky reply put it, that may be before some users get their OnePlus One invitation through.

Speaking of which, another of the questions asked whether the OnePlus One would ever be released properly without any kind of pre-order or reservation system. The answer: "Not in 2014."

The explanation (which they company has offered before) is actually quite understandable. "We understand that our current method may be slowing our growth down, but we'd rather grow slower and in a healthy way than taking too much risk and going out of business. Risk management is extra important in our scenario where we don't have hardware margins."

As that reply suggests, the reason the OnePlus One is so cheap in the first place is that it's being sold with virtually no profit margin.

Elsewhere, the OnePlus guys confirmed that they were looking into the possibility of a smaller device, and decried the merits of OLED displays (too expensive) and wireless charging (too slow) for future devices.
