DarkfieldVR: space dogfighting sim uses virtual reality

DarkfieldVR looks like one of the most immersive games ever for the Oculus Rift. It's a mission-driven co-operative dogfighting game set in space.

It allows you to step into the moon boots of a pilot on an elite squad filled with unique ships with special abilities. You can team up with wingmen to fight enemy craft, protect civilian convoys, and even destroy massive space structures.

So far, so standard space simulator. But DarkfieldVR lets you choose from four elite fighter pilots, and, much like characters in a beat 'em-up, each has their own special skills. There's no tedious admin to take car of as in some space games either. You're effectively a gun for hire, going into the action.

One mission sees you taking down a space station. But going hell for leather won't work – you'll have to use an experimental EMP device to disable the station's shield, then fire missiles to blast a hole in its hull. Fly in, destroy the core, then ride the shockwave back out.

And because it's a co-op game, you'll do it all with the help of a friend.

There's also a small, explorative single-player mode, which will fill you in on the game's backstory.

As well as Oculus Rift, it will also support CastAR and even Samsung's GearVR, so you won't be short of virtual reality options.

It will be released on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, and you can download the prototype now. It's already raised over $2,000 AUD on Kickstarter, and is seeking $10,000 AUD to go from virtual to actual reality.
