The creator of Flappy Bird has confirmed that his massively popular mobile game will return at some point in the future.
When asked recently on Twitter whether he would put Flappy Bird back on the App Store, Nguyen replied, "Yes. But not soon."
At the turn of the year, Dong Nguyen found his simple Flappy Bird game doing crazy business on iOS and Android. It was the talk of of Twitter and Facebook, and at its peak the ad-funded game was raking in $50,000 a day for the Vietnamese creator.
Which is why it took everyone by surprise when Nguyen decided to pull the game from both the App Store and the Google Play Store in mid-February.
"I am sorry 'Flappy Bird' users, 22 hours from now, I will take 'Flappy Bird' down. I cannot take this anymore," Nguyen tweeted at the time.
Amidst numerous complaints concerning the game’s addictiveness, accusations over potentially underhanded methods of stimulating the game’s popularity, and claims of legal transgressions (the game’s green pipes look an awful lot like those in Nintendo’s Mario series), Nguyen had finally snapped.
But just last week, a Rolling Stone interview revealed that Nguyen was giving thought to returning Flappy Bird to Apple’s and Google’s app stores. Any new version would likely come with a warning to "Please take a break" in view of those addiction complaints - which Nguyen claims is the sole reason for his removing the game in the first place.
Now we know that Flappy Bird will definitely soar again. But when, and will anyone still care when it does?
