Sony has unveiled the Sony Project Morpheus virtual reality headset to rival the Oculus Rift.
Presented during Sony's panel at GDC in San Francisco, Project Morpheus will work with the company's brand new PS4 games console.
Although the virtual headset is currently only a prototype, Project Morpheus will eventually become a commercially available product.
“Virtual reality is the next innovation from PlayStation that may well shape the future of video games", said Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios President. “VR has been the dream of many game creators ever since the first computer game. Many of us have dreamed about VR and what it could mean for the games that we create.”
Project Morpheus is a head mounted display that works with the PlayStation Camera of the PS4 to create the virtual reality experience.
The headset has inertial sensors built into it that can be picked up by the camera to track your movement and orientation.
3D stereo sound is provided all around your head to help obtain the totally immersive gaming experience.
Project Morpheus is also compatible with the PlayStation Move controller, which could be used to transform into an in-game weapon or object when used in conjunction with the VR headset.
Currently, the Project Morpheus specs are as follows:

These are subject to change as Project Morpheus is developed though, so don't take these as set in stone.

"Project Morpheus is the latest example of innovation from SCE, and we're looking forward to its continued development and the games that will be created as development kits get into the hands of content creators."
Currently, Sony is demoing a selection of games on Project Morpheus, including Oculus Rift title Eve Valkyrie, Thief and a few games of its own.
