Virgin Media has announced it will be launching 152Mb top speed broadband early next year, which will be “twice as fast as anyone else”.
The new Virgin Media broadband will be twice as fast as “any other widely available service”, so claims Virgin Media, and will have speeds “far beyond BT.”
Arriving via Virgin Media’s fibre optic cable network, it will be available at 12.5 million homes across the country.
Existing Virgin Media customers can expect speeds double that of current, with the company pledging to increase speeds by at least 20Mb.
The top speed 152Mb broadband will mean you could download an HD movie in under 4 minutes, or an entire music album in four seconds.
“As people connect more things simultaneously to the internet more often, they need powerful broadband with the bandwidth to deliver a great experience for everyone in the home. That connection is what we deliver with our unrivalled network”, said Tom Mockridge, Virgin Media’s CEO. “We are boosting speeds again and ensuring our customers can get even more value from their Virgin Media subscription.”
Virgin Media is increasing its broadband speeds due to dramatic increases in internet traffic. In the past year, Virgin Media customers’ internet traffic at peak times has grown 55 per cent.
Downloads accumulated by Virgin customers is also 50 per cent higher than the national average and has increased by a third in the past year.
“Our top speed will be twice as fast as BT and all the other reliant on their old copper telephony infrastructure as we extend our lead as Britain’s ultrafast broadband provider.”
Virgin Media has started writing to its customers to let them know what the new broadband speeds mean to their existing contracts.
