Adidas is looking to expand the reach of its miCoach training apps, with the sporting giant confirming it is looking to bring Adidas miCoach services to dedicated smartwatches such as the Samsung Galaxy Gear.
Despite having recently launched its own first effort at a miCoach enabled fitness watch, the Adidas miCoach Smart Run, the German-based fitness behemoth has confirmed that it is looking to bring its miCoach services to other companies’ wrist wear.
“There is potential for our miCoach apps to move on to dedicated smartwatches that require a mobile phone,” Tony Hope, a Senior Product Developer with Adidas said in an exclusive interview with TrustedReviews.
Although not being drawn to name exactly which manufacturers or existing smartwatches Adidas is looking to develop for, Hope added: “There is definitely potential there.”
With the Samsung Galaxy Gear and the Sony Smartwatch 2 the most likely candidates, it is expected that an Adidas miCoach smartwatch app would be a basic extension of the company’s existing Adidas miCoach Android app.
A number of fitness apps have already been adapted for Samsung’s first smartwatch, the Samsung Galaxy Gear. Offering wrist-based access to the smartphone hosted apps, RunKeeper and MyFitnessPal have already been converted to be compatible with the Gear.
Addressing why it didn’t include smartphone-syncing smartwatch capabilities into the miCoach Smart Run, Hope has suggested that it would have detracted from the watch’s try purpose.
“Those are things we deliberately left out,” he told us. “We wanted to deliver a product that is for runners, a smartwatch for runners rather than a smartwatch in general. For runners at this level running is an escape, they don’t want to have to carry their phone.”
