Samsung Galaxy Gear update brings app notifications to your wrist

A new Samsung Galaxy Gear update has been rolled out with the smartwatch now bringing app notifications direct to your wrist.

With the Samsung Galaxy Gear having been somewhat limited up to now in what details it can display, a recent firmware update has now been added to with a revised Samsung Galaxy Gear Manager platform. Building on the wrist wear’s call, text and email alerts, the Gear has been expanded to incorporate notifications from any of your smartphone hosted apps.

Requiring the watch to have already been upgraded to the latest firmware rollout – build V700XXUAMJ8 -, the newly updated Gear Manager platform means notifications from the likes of Twitter, Facebook and WhatsApp can now be received on your wrist.

With a dedicated notifications centre allowing you to determine exactly which applications push notifications to your wrist, the Gear’s functionality and usability just went up a considerable notch.

According to recent reports from US retailer Best Buy, the Samsung Galaxy Gear has failed to ignite much consumer interest, with return rates of the Sony Smartwatch 2 reportedly hitting 30 per cent.

Leaked papers from the retailer have stated: “The Galaxy Gear attachment rate within Best Buy is the highest among all channels; however the overall return rate is trending above 30 per cent.”

In a bid to increase interest in the timepiece, UK retailer Phones 4u recently offered the Samsung Galaxy Gear completely for free when consumers took the new Samsung Galaxy Note 3 out on a 24 month contract. Originally compatible only with the Note 3, the Samsung Galaxy S4 recently added Galaxy Gear compatibility.
