Curved screen iPhone to launch Q3 2014 reports claim

Apple will launch its first curved screen hosting iPhone during the third quarter of 2014, latest reports have suggested.

With Samsung and LG having both unveiled curved display smartphones in recent weeks in the form of the Samsung Galaxy Round and LG G Flex, claimed industry sources have now suggested that Apple will launch not one, but two curved iPhones next year.

Citing “a person familiar with the plans,” news house Bloomberg has reported that Apple has “two models planned for release in the second half of next year [which] will feature larger displays with glass that curves downward at the edges.”

If Apple’s handsets feature glass with a downward curve at the edges, the new iPhones will be curved in the opposite direction to the upwardly curved Samsung Galaxy Round.

Although murmurings of a curved iPhone are new, Apple has long been tipped to be working on larger iPhones for coming models, with 4.7-inch and 5-inch handset both mooted to make an appearance in the coming months to better compete with the likes of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One replacement.

As well as hinting at a curved iPhone, the unnamed industry sources have suggested the Cupertino-based company is also working on a new smartphone touchscreen sensor which will enable the phone to distinguish between light and hard touches.

According to the insider, “testing continues on the pressure-sensitive technology, which is unlikely to be ready for the next iPhone release and is instead planned for a later model.”
