Finally, the Galaxy Gear gets a little more useable
Samsung is issuing an update this week that will allow third-party app notifications to be viewed on the Samsung Galaxy Gear.
One of the main issues with the Galaxy Gear, apart from its gigantic price tag of course, is the fact you can’t actually view the majority of notifications on the smartwatch itself.
However, Samsung is going to fix that this week with an update that will allow them to show up in full on the device.
Previously, notifications for any app not made by Samsung would pop up on the Galaxy Gear telling us that a message or other content was waiting on our phone, but you couldn’t view it.
Now you’ll be able to get your Gmail, Facebook messages, read your tweets and Google Hangouts on your wrist, for example.
According to Engadget, Samsung is also adding a few further enhancements to its £299 bit of kit including improvements to the Smart Relay functionality. This will enable users to “perform actions seamlessly” between the Gear and their smartphone.
The lift-and-pause gesture that activates the clock will also be tweaked with the update.
Hopefully some other bug fixes will also be fixed for good measure, but the overall usability of the Galaxy Gear should be greatly improved.
The Galaxy Gear features a 1.63-inch 320 x 320p resolution Super AMOLED display and is powered by an 800MHz processor.
It uses Bluetooth 4.0 to connect to smartphones and uses a 1.9-megapixel camera for taking quick snapshots. Samsung has also equipped it with 4GB of internal memory, a speaker, a pair of microphones, an accelerometer and gyroscope.
If you’re expecting to use it as a sportwatch replacement, you might want to think again as it doesn’t have GPS.
