Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 to launch alongside Galaxy S5?

A Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 device is reportedly in the works, with the second-generation smartphone said to be heading for launch alongside the Samsung Galaxy S5.

Latest reports have suggested that Samsung is currently working on developing a slimmer version of its recently released Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch, with the revised timepiece to make an appearance in early 2014.

Chinese site ET news has claimed that an unnamed Samsung executive has stated that the new Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 will be around 15-20 per cent thinner than the previous model, making the device more comfortable around users’ wrists.

The source has also been cited as claiming that the Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 will be compatible with the Korean manufacturer’s upcoming Galaxy S5 handset, hinting at the potential for a bundle deal similar to the sale of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and original Galaxy Gear by certain retailers.

The Smartwatch’s integration with the Samsung Galaxy S5 is said to involve greater support for entertainment, games and health care apps, suggesting Samsung hopes the device will also be attractive to fans of fitness bands.

Despite the Galaxy Gear being relatively new to the market, the device has been widely criticised for limited functionality and compatibility, as well as its off-putting price tag of £299.

Following lower than expected sales figures for the Samsung Galaxy S4, the manufacturer is reportedly keen to fast track the S5 for a March 2014 release, presumably alongside the Galaxy Gear 2.

Seemingly set to play host to an all new aluminium shell, the Samsung Galaxy S5 will reportedly boast a 64-bit Exynos 6 CPU, 3GB of RAM and a 16-megapixel camera.

As well as these reported features, a recent patent filing suggests the S5 is to incorporate iris scanning technology, distinguishing it from the iPhone 5S’ fingerprint sensor.
