Xbox One owners with hardware issues given free game

Xbox One owners suffering from defective disc drives are being offered a free game to play while their replacement arrives.

According to emails from Xbox support sent to the affected console owners, Microsoft are giving them the choice of four launch titles to download for free.

Gamers waiting for their replacement Xbox One to arrive can download a digital copy of Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsport 5, Ryse: Son of Rome or Zoo Tycoon to play as they don’t require the optical drive to play.

“While a replacement console is on its way, we want to ensure our advance exchange customers can stay in the game,” said a statement from Microsoft. “We will provide each of them with a free digital download of one of the launch titles published by Microsoft Studios.”

The Xbox One release date was on Friday, November 22 and saw some new owners plagued with malfunctioning disc drives. Some found the disc drive was excessively noisy or was incapable of reading discs altogether.

Earlier this week, Microsoft released a statement acknowledging the issue and said it was working with customers to resolve them as quickly as possible.

“The issue is affecting a very small number of Xbox One customers. We’re working directly with those affected to get a replacement console to them as soon as possible through our advance exchange programme.”

The Xbox One launched for £429 with the Xbox One Kinect and a Wireless Controller. You could also purchase it bundled with one of the launch titles like FIFA 14 and Forza 5.
