Asda has joined specialist retailer GAME in opening up its PS4 pre-orders, allowing eager gamers to secure their next-generation console for just £20.
Although Sony has yet to formally announce a precise PS4 release date or confirmed PS4 pricing details, Asda has become the second leading retailer to open pre-orders for the fourth-generation console, with those splashing out the £20 deposit able to secure their device for the day of launch.
Limiting gamers to just one pre-ordered console per person, Asda’s PS4 pre-orders come a couple of months after the expected Xbox 720 rival was formally unveiled at a dedicated New York launch event alongside the console’s new touchpad integrating dualshock controller.
Creating adding incentive for gamers to secure their PS4 console ahead of launch, Asda, in suggesting that launch stocks might be limited announced: “Customers using their unique pre-order discount code will be sent their Sony PlayStation 4 first and before other regular orders.”
With Sony having tipped a PS4 release date for the “2013 holiday season,” Asda has added that “the current expected date of release made by Sony is Christmas 2013.”
Sounding far from convinced that this pre-Christmas launch window will include UK markets, the supermarket giant added: “Asda make no Guarantees that this is correct or will not change and Asda shall not be held responsible if Sony change or delay the release date of the Sony PlayStation 4 in the UK and or limit stock.”
Hinting that Sony could launch more than one variation of the PS4 console, with entry and pro level models having been previously mooted, the retailer stated: “If there is more than one version or bundle of the Sony PlayStation 4 at launch in Asda, we will give You a choice on which version You would like to buy.”
PS4 Specs
Despite coming under criticism for failing to show off what the console will look like, Sony has to date revealed just a selection of the PS4 specs sheet, including the device’s 8GB of RAM and high powered PC-based architecture.
Lining up alongside the new DualShock 4 controller, which will help provide more engaging gaming options, the PS4 will also be compatible with Sony’s newly unveiled stereo camera, proving Kinect-esque motion gaming capabilities.
A console that will rely on new software as much as hardware overhauls, the PS3 is set to benefit from Gaikai integration with online gaming improvements to be paired with increased cross platform compatibility with Vita devices.
