Activision confirms Destiny 2 is already in the works

If you’re still wrapping your gamepads around Bungie’s latest epic listen up, Activision has confirmed work has already started on Destiny 2.

Following the September release of the next-gen gaming masterpiece that is Destiny, the game’s publisher has revealed it is not resting on its space shooter laurels but pushing forward on work on a sequel.

“Players are already asking for new content,” Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg said in a quarterly earnings call last night.

He added: “Work has also begun on future expansion packs as well as on our next full-game release.

Although Hirshberg failed to offer any further detail on the nature of the second-gen Destiny, the Activision big-wig suggested more info might not be too far off.

Looking to the future release he stated: “We’ll update you on our progress on future calls.”

Speaking with TrustedReviews at E3 back in June, Bungie’s Community Manager David Dague suggested the developer needed to “earn the right” to make a Destiny sequel.

“We have to earn the right to put a number on the box,” he told us. “If we earn the right, we would love to explore those possibilities.”

Given that Destiny was the biggest new IP launch in gaming history, it appears that Bungie and Activision have won approval from gamers.

“I think by any measure, Destiny is off to a great start,” Hirshberg said. “We were the largest new franchise launch of all time.

“Despite the large investment… or maybe because of that large investment, we were able to be profitable from day one, and we think it’s only a matter of time now before it becomes our next billion-dollar franchise.”

As you might expect, there is currently no word on when the Destiny sequel will hit your console. We wouldn’t advise holding your breath on the launch being anytime soon though.
