Microsoft will, as expected, show off an early version of Windows 9 on September 30.
The company recently sent out invites a special launch event to be held in San Francisco on September 30. The invite asks the recipient to "Join us to hear about what's next for Windows and the enterprise."
Microsoft executives Joe Belfiore and Terry Myerson will be on hand to lead this discussion. Clearly this event will be focused on reaching out to business and power users of the Windows OS at an early stage.
To that end, part of Microsoft's strategy is set to be the launch of a Windows Technical Preview to highlight some of the additions, tweaks, and outright changes Microsoft is applying.
Many of these new features have leaked out in recent months. We know that there'll be a new Start menu, a Notification Centre, and a virtual desktop feature.
Microsoft is also expected to incorporate its Cortana voice-activated personal assistant into Windows 9 after a successful debut on Windows Phone 8.1.
Windows 9, which is being referred to as Windows Threshold in its current form, will launch some time in the Spring. As claimed by ZDNet, there are suggestions that this could be the last major new version of Windows for some time. In future we could see multiple smaller updates of Windows 9 rather than, say, Windows 10 in two years' time.
Hopefully we'll know more for sure come September 30.
