Destiny sales top $325 million

Activision has confirmed Destiny sales topped $325 million (£199 million) in the first five days of release.

Destiny has been received by the industry with a little less warmth than originally anticipated, but that hasn’t stopped consumers lapping up Bungie’s brand new IP.

According to a statement from Activision, retailers have shifted over $325 million worth of Destiny copies in the first five days after launch.

That figure is according to “Chart-Track, first parties, retail customer sell-through information and Activision Blizzard internal estimates”.

Sounds like its quite tricky to get a handle on exact sales figures, even for a publisher as huge as Activision.

That's not quite as huge as the $500 million figure announced earlier by Activision. That sum was for the copies of the game sold to retailers and first party

“Destiny fans played more than 100 million hours of the game in the first week. That’s on par with the engagement levels of our most popular Call of Duty games, which obviously is an industry leader,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing.

“Millions of gamers are having a great time playing Destiny and can’t put down their controllers. And this is just the beginning. Destiny is a platform that will grow and evolve and we will continue to work closely with our partners at Bungie to bring a long line of new experiences and content to life in the game.”

Although Destiny was the biggest IP launch ever, its sales figures can’t compare to something like GTA 5. Rockstar Games announced that it had sales top $1 billion (£625 million) in the opening three days.

In fact, GTA 5 day one sales broke all records, as it raked in $800 million (£496 million) on the first day alone.
