New Android preview confirmed for Google I/O

Google has confirmed that it will reveal the next version of its Android mobile OS at tonight's Google I/O event.

The company typically launches its mobile operating systems alongside new Nexus hardware later in the year, but this year will be different.

Taking a leaf out of Apple's book, Google will offer a preview of the new Android at its developer-focused Google I/O event, which kicks off today.

That's been confirmed by Sundar Pichai himself, who is a senior vice president at Google and the overseer of Android. He revealed his plans with regard to Android towards the end of an in-depth profile piece on

Following on from Jelly Bean and KitKat, it's presumed that the new Android will be named after a sweet beginning with "L." Many have speculated that it could be called Lollipop.

In addition to the new Android smartphone and tablet OS, the profile confirms that Pichai will discuss Android Wear. He'll also announce new manufacturing partners for the smartwatch OS.

While Pichar doesn't directly confirm it, the piece also claims that Google's TV plans could well be on the agenda. It's rumoured that Android TV will be introduced, which could see all of Google's TV software efforts brought together into one group within Android.
