Twitter has launched its mobile live streaming Periscope app just a couple of weeks after it scuppered rival Meerkat.
Earlier in the month it emerged that Twitter had purchased the team behind Periscope, an ambitious live-streaming mobile application that hadn't even been released to the public yet.
Now that Periscope app has been launched on iOS, offering iPhone users the ability to send live video feeds to their Twitter followers. An Android version is in the works.
As well as sending live video feeds to your contacts, Periscope saves those videos for later viewing. That's an important distinction between Periscope and the aforementioned rival, Meerkat, which would often find users following links to videos that were no longer there.
As predicted, Periscope also appears to be much more polished than its buzzed-about rival. Its significantly longer development time shows through in a more fleshed out design, and a cute heart-award system that sends real time affirmation to broadcasters.

Twitter made the news at the beginning of March for ruthlessly pulling the rug from under Meerkat, a rival live-streaming app that beat Periscope to market.
Meerkat utilised Twitter's social graph to send out tweets to your contacts when new video content was being broadcast, but Twitter pulled the app's access to it with just two hours notice.
With Meerkat continuing to grow in popularity (and attracting new funding), it looks like we're in for an almighty live streaming app scrap.
