The Galaxy S6 might only have just been unveiled, but iterative series spin-offs are already being mooted for launch.

First up is the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active, a seemingly waterproof take on the company’s latest iPhone 6 rivalling flagship phone.

Reports of the S6 Active’s arrival have surfaced after serial Twitter-based tipster @Upleaks spotted the model number for an as yet unannounced Samsung handset doing the rounds.

“SM-G890A for AT&T (Galaxy S6 Active perhaps?)” the leakster tweeted.

If you’re wondering how this model number relates to an ‘Active’ spin-off to the S6, let us explain.

The AT&T exclusive Galaxy S5 Active, which launched last year, landed with the official moniker of the SM-G870A. It is believed that the similarly titled SM-G890A will be the follow-on to this device.

With the S6 having dropped its predecessor’s water resistant capabilities, a submersible, ruggedized Active spin-off would make sense.

Although far from confirming the reportedly inbound device, the leak adds authority to claims the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge will soon be paired with a selection of mildly different alternatives.

Both handsets debuted at the Barcelona-based MWC gathering last week with the company’s own 64-bit Exynos chip lining up alongside 5.1-inch QHD displays and 16-megapixel, optical-image-stabilised cameras on the rear.

While it has been suggested the S6 Active will touch down before the end of the year, the Galaxy S6 release date has been confirmed for April 10.

The phone will be offered in five colours at launch, with traditional black and white models lining up alongside gold, blue and green alternatives.
